On March 18th, 2017 @ 7:00 pm Burnaby will come alive as the opening of the exhibition Luminescence celebrates its 2nd year as a diverse and unique cultural experience.  An event the whole family can enjoy.  We invite you to the Deer Lake Art Gallery to experience the artwork by 18 notable artists, from varying disciplines, present the many ways this brilliant natural phenomenon, which is the essence of light or Luminescence has inspired them. Luminescence is hosted and organized by the Burnaby Arts Council.  The Exhibition will open on March18th and will run until April 8th, 2017.
The Luminescence Exhibition marks the March equinox occurring at 10:29 UTC on March 20th. On this day the Sun will shine directly on the equator and there will be nearly equal amounts of day and night throughout the world. This is also the first day of spring (vernal equinox) in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of fall (autumnal equinox) in the Southern Hemisphere. From the latin: “Lumen” meaning light and the old English addition “essence” or spirit of the word Luminescence emerged.

Across the world, in different cultures it is an important date. Jewish Passover falls on the first full moon after the vernal equinox. Sham el-Nessim was an ancient Egyptian holiday that traces back to 2700BC and during Egypt’s Christian period it became Easter Monday. The mythological King of Persia ascended to the throne on this day and is commemorated by a two-week festival. It is a Zoroastrian holidays as well as a holy day of the Bahá’í Faith and Nizari Ismaili Muslims. The day after the equinox, it is the Bengali New Year’s Day. Japan has made it an official national holiday. The coming of spring and all that relates to it is celebrated widely.  All these celebrations make a point to celebrate the creation of light to some degree.

We have booked 2 amazing acts to keep you entertained throughout the OPENING EVENT of Luminescence.  We present Carolyn Neapole who is an exciting performer and a songwriter with a poet’s love of words and a painter’s eye for detail. For years a fixture on the Victoria and Vancouver music scene, Carolyn’s most recent self titled CD demonstrates her mastery of the recording studio and her leadership of a strong, supportive band. Carolyn Neapole is a mature talent with a bright future.  Winner of the West Coast M Awards Top Female Song writer and Top Female Vocalist, Neapole has had a career of being recognized for the depth of her songwriting and the wisdom in her voice. Comparisons with Sarah McLachlan, Jann Arden, Natalie Merchant, and other pop divas only hint at Neapole’s musical gifts.

Be sure you are for the 8:00 fire Performance by AcroFire Entertainment featuring Lukas Knab.  AcroFire Entertainment is a contemporary performance group that specializes in spectacular shows involving fire and acrobatics.  Lukas Knab founded the company with his partner Sierra in 2003 and has expanded to hire out Vancouver’s top fire performers for solo and group performances.  Lukas has been performing with fire for 10 years, and is one of the principle performers of AcroFire Entertainment.  As a solo artist Lukas offers a 15 minute contemporary fire performance which combines high level fire prop manipulation with martial arts and basic acrobatics.  The show utilizes a variety of different fire props and movement styles in order to keep any audience engaged, always changing and evolving until the final moments.  Professionalism and safety are always the first priority, so just sit back and feel the heat as Lukas lights up the stage!

We are pleased to present the Optical Illusion Museum and Metro Vancouver Art & Mural Society who are teaming up to create visually stunning 3D art for Deer Lake Art Gallery. The artistic style utilized is called trompe l’oeil, which is a French term for a visual illusion in art, especially as used to trick the eye into perceiving a painting or design that’s two dimensional as a three dimensional object. This evolution of art will use depth of perception, colours, and imagination that will leave you in awe and wonder. This is art that will truly trick your mind!

The Deer Lake Gallery welcomes the artistic team Hfour (Ben Z Cooper & Stuart J Ward) who are creating a new piece of immersive video art named “all Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace” which reflects the duality of both utopian and dystopian conditions.  All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace title references two other works by Richard Brautigan (1967) and Adam Curtis (2011). Brautigan’s poem envisions a world where cybernetics has advanced to a stage where it allows a return to the balance of nature and an elimination of the need for human labor. Curtis’ documentary suggests that technological utopia has failed. Using a series of monitors and mirrors, this artwork examines humanity’s current relationship with technology fifty years after the Brautigan’s work.

In addition to the OPENING EVENT, installations and live performances the Deer Lake Gallery will host a number of artists’ talks throughout the exhibition.  Please join us on Saturday, March 25th to welcome Nick Gregson & Jeff Cheung of Optical Illusion Museum.  Gregson has some of the largest street art murals in Burnaby. Saturday, April 1st @ 2:00 pm we welcome Monica Gewurz.  Gewurz art is a blend of representational and semi-abstract composition.  Her paintings are inspired by nature’s wonders and by designs from ancient civilization emphasizing light, colour, form and texture.  Using thick layers of materials to build an almost 3-D effect, creating complex surface and depth into her paintings.  Finally, we are pleased to have Chris Taylor demonstrating how to make, find, repurpose and scavenge things that help produce painted surfaces that are new, exciting and most important, have the appearance of spontaneity or effortlessness.
