Hosted by the National Nikkei Museum and Heritage Centre Auxiliary Committee, this fund raising event will feature a broad selection of indoor and outdoor plants and bedding plants just in time for Spring planting. Also featured will be a huge selection of Japanese style items and miscellaneous products for sale. Also, a varied selection of our always popular and delicious Japanese foods will be available. Proceeds will go toward maintaining the new Community Kitchen as well as assisting the Nikkei Centre with its many projects and programs. The Sakura Tree to May 30. Paintings by Karen Brownlee created to illustrate the children’s book, The Sakura Tree, written by Carolyn McTighe. The story follows three “picture brides” who immigrated to Canada in the early 20th century. Burnaby Celebrates BC 150 May 25-29

The Burnaby Arts Council presents an exhibition of: Burnaby 1x1 Art Project - mixed media and Photography & Graphics
Juried work by Metro Vancouver artists at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts 6450 Deer Lake, Burnaby. A second exhibition of the Burnaby 1x1 art project is scheduled at Brentwood Town Centre Mall for this summer.

April 24 – May 25 Reception: April 24, 5-7 p.m.
Vibrant and thought provoking artwork by secondary students from across School District #41 represents the diversity of talent and creativity coming from Burnaby’s young artists. Students in grades 8-12 submitted work for consideration, from which a selection of drawings, paintings, photography, sculpture and digital media are on exhibit. The show features 124 works of art, of which several are collaborative group projects with a total of 134 students exhibiting their art. Participating secondary schools: Alpha, Burnaby Central, Burnaby Mountain, Burnaby North, Burnaby South, Byrne Creek, Cariboo Hill, and Moscrop.

The Burnaby Rhododendron & Gardens Society (BRAGS)
The Burnaby Rhododendron and Gardens Society (BRAGS), with sponsorship by the City of Burnaby, is once again hosting Burnaby’s Beautiful Garden Tour on Sunday, July 20 10 a.m.-4 p.m., rain or shine. This is a self-guided tour of seven unique, private gardens located throughout the City of Burnaby.
Tickets can be purchased for $10 at Burnaby City Hall and most community centres. Each ticket includes a map and a brief description of the gardens. Master gardeners will be in attendance at each location, along with the owners and volunteer hosts. They will be glad to answer questions and identify plants of interest.
BRAGS is a non-profit society and proceeds from this fundraiser assist a variey of garden projects and organizatins throughout Burnaby. For more information, visit their website at www.brags.ca, email info@brags.ca, or call Jackie 604-420-0275.

Burnaby Writers Society
The Burnaby Writers Society's 2008 writing contest, open to all BC residents, is on the theme of "Green". Prizes of $200, $100 and $50, as well as honourable mentions, will be awarded for the best one-page submissions of either prose or poetry, interpreting the "green" theme any way you wish. Work can be in any form or genre, as long as it is complete on one page.
The entry fee is $5 per entry or $10 for three entries. Deadline for entries is May 31, 2008. Result will be announced, and winners will be invited to participate in a public reading, in fall 2008.
