Richard Major Group
The Richard Major Art Group will be celebrating their 35th anniversary, in 2007 and wish to honour their founder with an exhibition by the Group's many talented artists.
The Group began in 1972 under the guidance of Burnaby artist "Richard Major". A small number of local artists were brought together by Mr. Major, a celebrated, retired commercial artist and art professor, for the purpose of upgrading their drawing and painting skills. Mr. Major acted as instructor at the group's weekly meetings. As the years went by the focus changed and guest artists were regularly brought in to introduce new ideas and to explore other mediums.
Through the years they have maintained their original focus and still meet on a weekly basis, September through May, to paint, discuss projects or assist each other with art work. Guest artists are still brought in to demonstrate their techniques and members are encouraged to host demonstrations or workshops. The Group publishes a newsletter The Paint "Rag". In addition, they also maintain a considerable library with new books continuously being added. Presently they have 90 adult members creating art work in oil, water colour, acrylic, pastels, pencil and fibre art. Many of the members are established artists but all levels of development are welcome.
The Richard Major Art Group is actively seeking venues to showcase their members' talent in addition to the annual Rhododendron Festival, Discovery Day, and bi-annual Showcase events that they currently participate in.
