Gallery Coordinator & Events Assistant ($16/hr)

Permanent p/t – 30 hours/week

The Burnaby Arts Council (BAC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the visual, literary and performing arts. Its aim is to bring the community together through the Arts. The BAC operates Deer Lake Gallery, featuring visual art exhibitions by local, emerging, and established artists, as well as serving as a hub for creatives in Burnaby by hosting a variety of talks, workshops and special events.

The BAC is seeking to fill the part-time position of gallery coordinator at the Deer Lake Art Gallery. This is an excellent position for someone who is diligent, highly organized, and self-motivated.   Total of 30 hours weekly and often times events and activities are held on the weekend.  You must have a flexible work schedule.

Role Description

  • Support planning and delivery of annual festivals and other programs
  • Support administration for the summer 2019 exhibitions and gallery events
  • Plan, schedule & coordinate art exhibitions
  • Establish & maintain working relationship with artists
  • Correspond and arrange all details pertaining to exhibitions including but not limited to contracts, install, exhibition dates, volunteering, artist workshops
  • Coordinate, manage and maintain volunteers for events & activities
  • Assist executive director in event planning and implementation
  • Responsible for all media relations including but not limited to social media (facebook, Instagram, twitter)
  • Writing and publishing press releases

Knowledge and Experience

The ideal candidate will a recent graduate from any of the following: Arts administration, Event Management, Fine Arts, Curatorial and Critical Studies, Art History or related field. In addition, we hope that the candidate will also possess:

  • Gallery experience working with artists
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Interest in Public Engagement with the local arts community. Knowledge of the Burnaby Arts Council is an asset
  • Interest in public engagement and educational program planning and delivery in the arts
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Exemplary organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision
  • Ability to take initiative and problem solve
  • Computer experience with Microsoft Office Suite and social media platforms

  • Excellent communication skills in English – written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team – Punctual, courteous and professional in manner and appearance
  • Strong leadership skills; self-initiating, enjoys a challenge, on top of tasks
  • Must be flexible: regular shift is Tuesday – Friday plus events & activities on evenings & weekends.
