FAQs & General Terms and Conditions
Is there commission?
Yes, our standard commission for all artwork is 30%. We accept, cash, cheque and credit card. The Burnaby Arts Council will accept for the purchase of the works: cheques made payable to “Burnaby Arts Council”, credit cards and cash. There will be a 2.75% charge if a credit card is used. The Gallery will pay the Artist by cheque, deducting the commission and credit card charge within 30 days of the closing date of the exhibition.
Artwork must remain in the exhibition until after the closing event on Saturday, April 25th @ 9 pm. If you are are unable to be at the closing event you MUST pick up your artwork on Tuesday, April 28th by 3:00 pm. We do not have the space to store artwork and need time to install the next installation.
How much does it cost to be apply?
FREE. Making this community event accessible to everyone.
How many artists usually participate?
Usually between 20 – 30 individual and groups of emerging and professional artists.
What if my art is a work in progress and not ready before the submission deadline?
Don’t worry, we encourage artists that are working on new concepts to still apply. All conceptual work must be completed, photographed and image emailed to the Gallery by February 10, 2020 at midnight.
So please apply with your concept with size and a sketch of the artwork. The application allows you to select that option.
How many visitors visit the exhibition?
Annual attendance is aprox 1,000-1,500 visitors. So WOW! The first year there was a line up down the street. We expect at least 300-500 people to attend the opening event!
Artist Participation – Opening Event (March 14, 2020)
We ask that all artists participating in the exhibition be at the opening event on Saturday, March 14th. It is only through working collaboratively on the marketing that we have been so successful on promotions and attendance. If you plan on being out of town and really cannot commit to attending the opening night maybe participating in this AWESOME event is not for you . . . ?
Opening Date: UNKNOWN DUE TO GALLERY UPGRADE (it will be March 2020, after the 14th!)
Time: VIP opening event starts at 7:00 pm, General Public access is @ 8:00 pm (this schedule is estimated and final details to be worked out)
Due to the later opening the time may have to be later in the evening due to the sunset.
VIP Tickets – Opening Event
Artists are asked to be at the EARLY VIP opening @ 6:30 pm.
Each artist will be given 1 (one) guest pass for early access to the event. (does not include beverage ticket)
The 2020 event is also our GRAND OPENING celebrating our fantastic expanded Gallery space and the beginning of our 50th Anniversary Year of celebration! More details to following regarding the details of VIP All Access Passes. Previous years the VIP All Access Passes cost $25 each, which guarantees early access.
We encourage and ask artists to help sell tickets to the event as it helps our organizations to cover part of the costs for hosting this amazing event! There will be live music, entertainment and light show at the March 2020 event!
When is the installation scheduled?
Installation of the exhibition is scheduled: UNKNOWN (Between 14th and March 17 – March 20 ??)
Normal office hours are Tuesday – Friday 10 am to 4 pm. (THERE WILL BE CLOSURES IN THE NEW YEAR DUE TO GALLERY UPGRADE****)
The gallery will be closed in Jan/Feb – actual closure date to be posted later. (Due to a gallery upgrade/expansion.)
When is installation take down?
All artwork must be picked up after the closing event on Saturday, April 25th after 9:00 pm or at the latest on Tuesday, April 28th 3:00 pm. We are installing the next installation on Wednesday, April 29th!! So no exceptions as we do not have the space to store in the gallery.
Is there a cancellation fee?
If you cancel participation after March 1, 2020 there is a $200 ADMIN fee. There is extensive admin, marketing & promotion cost to the exhibition and we ask that you understand any cancellation to participate takes a considerable amount of our time.
Equipment & installation requirements?
Please connect with the gallery coordinator if you require special equipment. The supply of video equipment, computer or digital projector for the presentation of artworks is the responsibility of the Artist. The Deer Lake Art Gallery does not provide technical support, cover expenses or provide engineering services for installation of exhibitions.

* Monday, JANUARY 6, 2010 – submission deadline
* Gallery Upgrade Closure – could be as early as December and for sure into Jan/February (date to be posted later)
* Friday, January 17, 2020 artists will be notified if they have been accepted.
* Monday, Feb 11, 2020 at midnight – 3 high resolution images of the completed artwork
* Tuesday, Feb 11, 2020 – completed contract signed and email to the office. (can be mailed as well)
* Friday, March 6, 2020 – gallery labels (template provided to you by the gallery coordinator)
* March?? exhibition installation (TBD – likely March 17 – 20)
If you have never visited the Deer Lake Art Gallery we encourage you to stop by and check out the space BEFORE FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2019 at 4:00 pm. As we mentioned already there will be gallery closures beginning in December. (Highly likely there is going to be major construction in December, and no public access)
Do I really have to help market the event?
The Burnaby Arts Council invests a great deal into the success of the event and in turn ask that the artists participating in the exhibition to ALSO collaborate on the success, which includes:
- Follow the Deer Lake Art Gallery on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter
- Share and promote event details on all social media handles
- Tag us in your posts
- Pick up posters & rack cards and distribute
- Encourage friends and family to come out to the event, help us cover costs by selling VIP All Access Passes
These days it is not enough just to create art there is a business side to any successful artist.
