Burnaby, BC – July 5th & 6th, 2019 – Visitors to the Deer Lake Gallery in Burnaby will once again be dazzled by an event noted for being fun for the entire family! The Summer Arts Festival kicks off Friday Night @ 6 pm and continues to an all-day event on Saturday, July 6th from 10 am to 5 pm. We have booked the best in local performers and professional artists set against the beautiful Deer Lake Park. The Festival activities are surrounded by majestic trees and park on nearby Deer Lake, Burnaby.
Creative Station hosted by our presenting sponsor, Opus Art Supplies. Explore new things – experiment, get hands-on, try something new, and stock up on summer memories of creating in the park! Stop by the Opus tent to experience the magic of marbling, where you will create swirls of glorious colour and lift it onto a paper surface. This ancient art technique involves floating paints on the surface of a gel-like medium (known as the “marbling size”) and then transferring the floating design onto paper or fabric. In addition to marbling, festival participants are invited to collaborate on a large scale painting with POSCA Acrylic Paint Markers. From doodles to details, express yourself and make your mark on a communal painting! Opus will supply the surface and paint – bring your creative ideas to add to the artwork and help make a community masterpiece.
Let your imagination run WILD we are stoked to have Muckabout Gift Gallery on site at our upcoming 5th Annual Summer Arts Festival at our Kidz Zone ‘inspiration station’. They will be working with the kids on a free hands on mixed media project, opening up your art to endless creative possibilities. Layering colour, texture and imagery together. We are pleased to have such great art experience at our event!
AcroFire will be putting on an epic show. Lukas Knab is a contemporary circus performer and object manipulator specializing in a variety of different juggling and flow arts. He will be presenting one of his favorite modalities in the form of contact juggling, which is a mesmerizing art using a single crystal ball which is sure to trick the viewers senses! AcroFire Entertainment here in Vancouver which specializes in epic fire performances and many other types of creative circus entertainment.
Experience the magic of live performance of the Burnaby Summer Theatre for 2019!
Traditional Coast Salish Cedar Weaving with Kwantlen Elder Hazel. Kwantlen Elder, Hazel (Fillardeau) Gludo has been weaving cedar for a number of years. Hazel will teach and talk about how important it is in our lives and how years ago the people used it, and how we have great respect for our cedar tree and we too need to learn respect our trees that are around us, for the air, and how beautiful it is that we have trees.
Artist Demonstration with Peter Lattey. Peter developed a love for wood and natural forms at an early age. Lattey’s work can best be described as Jazz music carved into wood. The forms and shapes flow sensuously. The mystery of that emotional or intellectual connection is what Peter strives to achieve.
Stroll and shop at the juried Artisan Market both Friday & Saturday. The Market features some of BC’s finest artists and designers displaying a variety of hand crafted items. The Festival includes many talented artists!
3-2-1 . . . PAINT! The final words one often hears when entering the colour massacres of live painting competitions. Usually a short amount of time, a palette of colours, brush in hand and an audience of eager onlookers excited about what creations lay in store from the competitors. Vancouver has seen a plethora of new live painting events pop up in recent years. This is our 4th year featuring our very own Park’s Edge Paint Off: Live International Painting Tournament. Many people have never seen how paintings are created and it is an exciting spectacle to get a glimpse of what the creative process looks like first hand. Mingle that with an emphasis on speed and the chance for prizes and recognition and it’s a recipe for a fun engaging event with thrills, excitement and culture. Audience voting determine the winners of the events, and silent auction for the real prize of those who will get to walk home with a one-of-a-kind piece of art. Burnaby Tourism, the local destination marketing organization and official ambassador of Burnaby have donated the prize money for the people’s choice 1st, 2nd & 3rd place winners of the Park’s Edge Paint Off!
All artwork created during the event will be available for purchase . . . you just have to win the silent auction! This year to top 10 voted artworks will be featured in an ONLINE auction! May the odds be ever in your favour!
